OHITX Open Channel Newsletter

Welcome to the first edition of the OHITX Open Channel newsletter. The quarterly publication will deliver industry related news, health IT policy, OHITX programs and information specific to our members. Each edition will play host to an “OHITX Ask the Healthcare Expert” Q & A column where members may suggest topics and experts will be invited to respond.

Please take time to read the first edition of the OHITX Open Channel to learn more about how the OHITX Open Channel can play a leading role in your overall OHITX membership experience.
HIPAA Goes HITECH
Updated Guidelines for 2010

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) established new HIPAA requirements and guidelines for covered entities and expanded the definition of a business associate. Updated HIPAA policies in the HITECH Act have given “teeth” to enforcement with increased penalties for violations, and higher expectations for business associates. Is your organization prepared to navigate the changes?

OHITX has assembled a series of guides and “checklists” to evaluate your current compliance and prepare for the new rules, many in effect February of this year. Go to the OHITX HIPAA Resource Section to review the materials.

Ask the Healthcare Expert Q & A
HIPAA Privacy and Security
Ask the Healthcare Expert Q&A

The arrival of 2010 challenges us to reflect on our healthcare policies and procedures and identify some New Year’s resolutions. The fact is that the healthcare operation is getting more and more complex with each new regulatory guideline, application, and integration.

The dawn of the HITECH Act dictates the need for a revised approach to HIPAA Privacy and Security and a laser sharp lens focused on business associates (BA) and the important BA administration that will protect healthcare operations from risk.

OHITX has invited Grant Peterson of DG Peterson, LLC to respond to several questions initiated by recent attendees of the OHITX Collaborative HEALTH IT “CHIT CHAT” on HIPAA. Here are just a few of the questions:
"Is credit monitoring a required component of the breach response mechanism?"

"Do we need to have a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) for every pharmacy we do business with?"
To view the entire Q and A, click here.

Each time OHITX publishes this newsletter, we will include this special OHITX Ask the Healthcare Expert section devoted to a relevant topic facing the healthcare industry. We invite members to suggest topics for future publication by contacting Colleen Sauter, OHITX administrator, at csauter@ohitx.org.

On-demand technology services are a cost-effective way to manage the healthcare operation by creating access to best-in-breed solutions for a low, monthly fee. Now more than ever, capital and operating budget constraints are driving the need for innovative ways to implement technology in healthcare. The affordable “Cloud” is taking its place as a viable technology platform. Likewise, on-demand service providers are emerging as trusted partners in health IT initiatives such as EMR, HIS, RIS, PACS and teleradiology.

Who should attend? Anyone looking to expand their knowledge base around healthcare technology:
  • Healthcare provider seeking to adopt a new system or migrating to a second generation system
  • Vendors looking to offer services using an on-demand platform
  • Trusted advisors, consultants, and integrators seeking to add these solutions to their tool kit

Learn about:

  • Cloud computing delivery models:
    • Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)
    • Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)
    • Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)
  • How on-demand solutions offer faster ROI compared to traditional, capital-intensive approaches
  • How on-demand service providers are driving faster adoption of EMR, HIS, RIS, PACS and teleradiology
